Larry thanked Dad for saving his life 40 years ago while we were shopping at the Apple Store together in Colorado Springs, Colorado after attending the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. Now 76, Larry had a heart attack at age 36 when my Dad, an interventional cardiologist blew up a balloon in Larry’s heart with an angioplasty on his closed blood vessel; every day since, Larry has thought about my Dad. The reason I’m a Doctor today, is because as a kid, in front of all my 7th grade friends, I also watched a patient tell Dad, “Thank you, Doctor for saving my life.” The moment so inspired me, that I wanted to do what he did, to save lives. Seeing a man do that again to my father at this age, thanking Dad for saving his life was equally awesome. The things we do impact people in ways we will never fully appreciate.
Per usual, the AAD annual meeting was a reunion of mentors, thought leaders, and Dermatology innovations. Positive outcomes from the meeting included funding opportunities for a Dermatology Fellowship at Las Vegas Dermatology® and Dr. David Cotter’s talks on Industry partnerships and updates in Psoriasis including the Taltz Zepbound weight loss study conducted at Las Vegas Dermatology®. After attending the meeting, I spent time back home with my parents and that’s when Larry thanked Dad.
It was a landmark night for the Las Vegas Dermatology Foundation’s Derm Grand Rounds 4/11/2026. I had the opportunity to give the Keynote address, “Everything is Everything”, where I spoke about how everything we do matters. 50 attendees including our medical students, pre-medical students, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and physicians spent time with fascinating patients, interactive case presentations and posters. $50,000 was raised, benefiting our charity, the Las Vegas Dermatology Foundation. Have you ever experienced something awesome, something beyond yourself, a moment that made you question everything or made you feel small? What you felt in that moment, was a sense of awe! I’ve had a few these recently, like Michigan winning the NCAA Basketball National Championship or seeing Dad thanked for saving a life. Travelling has been particularly impactful for me, especially my visits to Angkor Wat, which always kindle a sense of wonder. Even though I can’t go back as much as I would like, I look at the art purchased there, or the videos and photos, which transport me to that space and time where my sense of awe returns. Many times, we are forced to use our imagination to reconnect through a memory. My favorite recent line when people ask what they can do to look younger is to advise, “Time Travel”. Without a Time Machine option, we are left to the real world tools at our disposal, such as The Dr. Vegas 444 series of treatments.
