Mohs Micrographic surgery is one of the most effective and definitive ways to treat skin cancer. Named after surgeon Frederic Mohs who invented the Mohs Surgery Technique, Mohs surgery involves removing tumor, examining that tumor under the microscope and continuing the process in office until the tumor is completely excised. Sometimes, the procedure takes a couple of hours and sometimes it takes a half day or longer to ensure complete tumor removal. Dermatologists are particularly well suited to perform this surgical technique as a dermatology residency involves dermatologic surgery and dermatopathology evaluation. Once removed, the defect or hole left from the surgery is typically repaired by a number of different techniques.
Additional information
During their dermatology residency training, Doctors H.L. Greenberg and David Cotter had extensive training in Mohs micrographic surgery. As Affiliate Members of the American Society for Mohs Surgery– an organization of dermatologists interested in performing Mohs surgery for better patient care and skin cancer removal, Dr. Greenberg and Dr Cotter continue to read and learn about the technique. Additionally, they are adept at many different types of skin closure techniques including primary closures, flaps, and grafts.
In some cases your surgical site can become too extensive or complicated to repair, if this does happen a referral may be required to remove any additional tumor or close your defect.
