From the Aesthetician’s Desk

One of the most common concerns I hear during the winter months is that, “My skin is becoming too dry”.  The change of season should be accompanied with a change in your at home skin care routine.

It’s time to up your exfoliating to three times a week now.  Using a gentle scrub with smooth, round microbeads, and a glycolic or lactic acid is the best way to remove dead skin cells at home.  Keeping your face free of dead skin cells will help with dryness and flaking- allowing products to penetrate deeper into the skin.  Another major component of winter skin care is moisturizing, moisturizing, moisturizing! Now that your skin is clean and free of dead cells and debris, it’s time to replenish and lock in moisture.  Switch to using a cream this time of year instead of lighter lotions.  Creams will help lock in moisture by creating a barrier on top of the skin.  Many creams contain humectants which draw in water from the bottom layers of the skin to the top.

When the skin barrier dries up and becomes compromised, that’s when our skin turns red and becomes inflamed.  Follow these simple rules this winter and your skin will look great all season long!
