As life goes on patterns and behaviors repeat themselves in recognizable ways, the sun rises and sets, days get longer then shorter, weather changes and life becomes predictable despite certain unpredictability. May was our month, Skin Cancer Awareness month, and Las Vegas Dermatology® went, “All In”- visiting The Las Vegas Ballpark, Friday May 16th with The Sun Bus, The Las Vegas Aviators and The Las Vegas Dermatology Foundation. Along with a group of motivated medical students and Skin Cancer Awareness Advocate, Comedian and T.V. Star, Jimmie, “J.J.” Walker, who threw out the 1st pitch, funds were raised for the Las Vegas Dermatology Foundation, a tax deductible 501c3 educating those interested in Dermatology careers, offering treatments for skin disease and sponsoring lectures and community events. Jimmie & I were on Fox5 News & he spoke on The Ball Park Jumbotron about Las Vegas Dermatology® and the importance of checking for Skin Cancer. The Foundation is doing a Dermatology Grand Rounds event for medical professionals in July, and we could use your financial support- send checks to the office or donate via Paypal.
Every year at this time, I lecture at the 5 Continent Congress (5CC) Meeting, this year in Lisbon, Portugal. I spoke on goal setting for life and career, gave an Updates in Psoriasis talk, and chaired a Medical Session. While there, I spent time with Henry “H.L.” Chan, Michael Gold, David Goldberg, Doug Abel, the Logi-vent crew and medical professionals from Albania, Sri Lanka, and Korea, among others. Although I’ve actively participated in many International conferences, for the 1st time I was approached to be on 5CC’s Board of Directors. Having successfully avoided recent Board work, I feel a Global calling to raise awareness of our specialty that will bring attention to the World Class Medical Care delivered at Las Vegas Dermatology®. After my time in Lisbon, I visited my cosmetic skin care colleague, Dr. Heewon Suh 서희원클리닉 in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea where I was able to see what all the hype is about over Korean skin care.
In my goal setting talk, I pointed to Tony Robbins for Life Goals, Tony Hseih’s book Delivering Happiness for how to Run a Business and David Goggins for Incorporating the Physical into your life and doing something you hate every day. My parents turned 80 this year, milestones like these remind me that you have one life to live. Some of you have read about my friend, Lucy Jacobs, who survived 2 years in Auschwitz concentration camp, losing her family there that first day. Sadly, Lucy passed away this month at age 96- she lived a full life and endured more suffering than anyone should; Lucy would agree with me asking you, “So how are you spending your time”?
While in Europe for the 5CC meeting, I had dinner the night before with Massimiliano Campanari aka Chef Max; a friend who went from apprentice chef under the tutelage of the one and only Chef Theo Schoenegger of Sinatra’s fame to open Lavo restaurant in Vegas then Personal Chef and owner of Vittoria Colonna in Ischia, Italy- we met for what can only be described as a feast for the eyes and palate- Italy has the best food- Living up to the hype of the Eat portion of Eat, Pray, Love. You should go to Italy, and you should go in the beginning or end of summer. 2025 is ½ over and I’ll be spending more time with my folks this year; doing my best to keep them looking young with the tricks I’ve learned by attending various meetings, my interactions with colleagues, speaking for industry and the devices, drugs, procedures and cosmeceuticals we have in the LVDerm clinic combined with my years of experience as a Board Certified Dermatologist.
Pick the things you want to achieve this year and go for it- we have an exceptional team at Las Vegas Dermatology®, my Derm Bro David Cotter, M.D., PhD, Mohs Surgeon Sarah Bovenberg, M.D., PhD, Scott MacCleod, D.O., Joe Gurule, PA-C, Jessica Pepich, PA-C, Xin Wang, PA-C; Helen Pirtz, FNP-C, Melissa Shipp LAE and Maria Zarate, LAE- Learn more about our Providers on our website and schedule your appointment today!
