The Las Vegas Dermatology team took a Zappos Culture Tour (#ZapposCulture @Zappos) Monday 6/17/2019. It was important for the #LVDerm team to see how the culture at Zappos influences what they do. Zappos is an internet company that was purchased by Amazon and started by selling shoes (Zapatos in Spanish). On line, Zappos calls themselves, “A service company that just so happens to sell shoes”. The company has its own well-defined culture and a set of 10 core values guiding their actions.
In February of 2019, a Polish Business-man friend of mine, Richard (@ryszard_ch) and I had dinner, and it was there that he told me one of the best things he did while visiting Las Vegas was taking the Zappos Culture Tour. With our new Dermatologist, Dr. David Cotter joining the practice 7/1/2019, I thought it was important for our Las Vegas Dermatology team to see how the Zappos team does their culture. What we saw was amazing- a place where work and personal life mix in a welcoming, friendly environment where the team and team wellness are celebrated in a fun, playful and supportive environment. Customer service at Zappos is paramount and customers are celebrated and treated to top-notch, “can do” service by Zappos employees. The culture is so important at Zappos that after an initial 4 weeks of customer service training period, new employees are offered 1 month’s salary to quit!
At Las Vegas Dermatology our mission statement is, “For a Healthier & More Beautiful Life”. We are a dermatology practice, and while we are focused on treating diseases and cosmetic concerns of the skin, ultimately we are looking to improve the lives of our patients and our team. We treat all kinds of patients, from those who have very serious medical concerns to people with unwanted tattoo ink preventing them from joining the military. Many of our patients are fearful of the implications of a diagnosis or what skin condition they may have. Other patients are simply looking for a little pampering with a laser facial, Hydrafacial or light chemical peel for an event. Ultimately, I am a physician in a medical dermatology practice, and while we enjoy ourselves at Las Vegas Dermatology, the serious nature of what we do requires a fiduciary responsibility where the needs of the patient are put above our own needs.
Every business has its own unique characteristics, and it has taken us a number of years to make our #LVDerm culture what it is today. Las Vegas Dermatology remains the type of practice where I would want to go if I were a patient- a warm, welcoming environment where patient questions are answered, diagnosis explained and treatments are offered. We have team meetings every other Wednesday where we grow our esprit de corps and discuss how to improve what we do. Our goal is to treat each patient as if they were the most important person in the world. Thank you Zappos for letting us explore your culture and learn from you.
The Team, The Team, The Team,
Dr. Vegas
