Dermatology Notes from Dr. H.L. Greenberg

Finding a purpose in life is a powerful and motivating exercise.  I remember being struck the first time I read the book, Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, a concentration camp survivor who struggled to find purpose after having his life changed forever with his many losses during the Holocaust.  To summarize, Frankl wrote, “If you have a big enough why the how will follow.”  When I reflect upon the purpose of Las Vegas Dermatology, I keep coming back to our motto, “For a Healthier & More Beautiful Life”.  Our motto serves as the guideline for the actions of my team and me.  We want to help our patients achieve a healthier and more beautiful life.

A friend of mine asked me recently, what drove me during med school?  I reflected and wrote to her the following, “I knew that my next door neighbor studied geology for 5 years before he became the 8th man to walk on the moon– that impressed me & and a professor of mine at the University of Michigan learned Greek in order to complete his doctoral thesis- so I figured that if I really wanted to be a doctor & then a dermatologist, I had to study and work really hard to achieve my dreams.”  Being a board certified dermatologist and working at Las Vegas Dermatology is my dream practice and job.  Having a place where I would want to be treated as a patient is my why, the delivery of exceptional skin care is the how.

In medicine there are no universally accepted criteria for, “Who is the Best Health Care Provider” or, “Which is the Best Dermatology Practice?”  Interestingly, there are no shortages of magazines, websites and billboards willing to give their opinion on the, “Best Physician” matter.  I am proud to say that both my practice and I have never paid to be listed as, “The Best” or “Best of” in any publication, but have received many accolades for our service nonetheless.  There are no explicit reproducible criteria for rating physicians or dermatology practices, as health care providers we are left to be our own Jiminy Cricket– trying our best to do what is right.  A standard set of criteria such as a Michelin star like system with average wait times, overall office cleanliness, front office staff responsiveness, billing office knowledge, medical assistant helpfulness, website ease of navigation, medical records completeness, etc. would provide a more accurate and reproducible evaluation of, “Who is the Best.”  I would put our practice up against any dermatology practice in the country; I am confident that the patients of Las Vegas Dermatology are receiving the best care possible to help provide them with a healthier and more beautiful life.
